Originating in China, Pekingese are named after the former name of the Chinese capital, Peking (now Beijing). The breed is also known as ‘lion dog’, like the shih tzu. In the eighth century, Pekingese dogs lived with royalty and had a life of luxury. It is no wonder they walk with such pride, although their rolling gait may also have been purposely bred to prevent them from wandering off.
Physical traits
Pekingese are compact dogs with long, flowing hair – truly ‘lion-like’ in the way they look and how they carry themselves. They are small but quite heavy-boned for their size. The skull is flat at the top and the face is wide and flat. The eyes of the Pekingese are large, round and dark. Their muzzles are dark and wrinkled with hanging, heart-shaped ears. Pekes have a long body and walk close to the ground. Their long coats can come in almost any colour.
Big personality
Pekes lives up to their other name of ‘lion dog’ or ‘Peking lion dog’ with their big, proud hearts. They will protect the ones they love, even with their small compact little bodies. They are very loving, affectionate and always ready for a game. They like to be the child of the house and treated like the royalty they used to live amongst.
It is no wonder the Pek has a self-important attitude, probably one of the reasons why they don’t always get along with other dogs. They prefer the company of other Pekingese, and it can take them a long time to get used to other animals in the household.
Pekingese are very intelligent, but that intelligence is offset by an independent mind and a wide stubborn streak. Training them is a challenge. They are brave, sometimes to the point of being foolhardy, and will defend you to the death if needed.
They are very loving, loyal, affectionate, quirky, intelligent and gorgeous. Pekes love a little exercise, but they are not the type to hassle you for a walk every evening and are ideal for apartment living.
