The Animal Anti-Cruelty League has been protecting and caring for domestic animals since 1956 and is the second largest independent animal welfare organisation in South Africa. Their six branches around the country rely solely on the public for financial support. They proactively get involved in all aspects of animal welfare:
- provide shelter for abandoned animals
- promote adoptions
- prosecute animal cruelty cases
- run welfare hospitals for lower income groups
- provide mobile clinics in underprivileged areas
- do educational visits to schools and clubs
- promote sterilisations through awareness campaigns
Their aim is to prevent and eliminate cruelty to animals (whether due to ignorance, neglect or a lack of compassion) and to alleviate animal suffering.
