KONG Extreme can most definitely be recommended for creating positive chewing habits.  This dog toy is tough and ideal for very active dogs that need to focus their energy.  The owners of high performance dogs find this a most helpful toy. Like other Kong toys, this Kong version also features a cavity for a surprise treat that can be used as a reward or incentive for good behaviour.

Here is a list of stuffings you can try for your kong:

Honey (adult dogs only, never for puppies)

Peanut butter (creamy or cruchy)

Mashed bananas

Cottage cheese (low fat and low sodium)

Plain yoghurt

Mashed pumpkin

Mashed potatoes (without salt)

Canned dog food (try new varieties as a dog treat)

You don’t have to stuff big amounts of stuffing in, you just need to coat the inside, then you can add few of their favourite biscuit treats.  Or mix the two together and stuff the kong. Then freeze for a few hours or days. Freezing will make the stuffing last longer.

There are three basic chewing styles or behaviours when it comes to dogs and their toys:

  • Gentle chewers – These dogs are easy on toys and prefer plush or fabric toys. They usually lick or suck on their toys, rarely ever destroying them.

  • Average chewers – These dogs love all kinds of toys and will often carry toys around with them. They will be destructive with plush or fabric toys, but rarely destroy rubber toys.

  • Power chewers – These dogs are strong, determined chewers who need more discretion when it comes to toys. Choose durable, interactive play toys along with hard rubber toys. The right size of toy will be helpful when picking toys for the Power chewer.

For all dogs, regardless of chewing temperament, always supervise play. Be sure to replace any toy with cuts, tears or rips.
