It’s so exciting! You are getting a puppy! Although they are very cute and fluffy, they are also a big responsibility and will demand a lot of care, support and patience from you.

If your puppy’s mom isn’t around, you need to use a commercial canine milk replacer that has been specifically designed for newborn puppies. Weaning your puppy to solid food is not be an overnight endeavor but should ideally take place over the course of two to three weeks. Starting around four to six weeks of age, begin introducing your puppy to puppy food by blending the puppy food with the milk replacer. Offer this puppy meal three to four times a day, gradually reducing the amount of puppy milk used to make the mixture. This way your puppy gradually learns to adapt to solid food and gastric upset is minimized. By around eight weeks of age your puppy should be eating solid food.

Feeding the milk to your puppy is not always easy, as with human babies, you may need a bottle to ensure the milk is properly ingested so that your puppy can get the nourishment he needs to grow strong and healthy.

The sooner you get your new puppy into good and healthy habits the better but as these habits are new, you will need to give your puppy the chance to learn to do exactly what you want him to do. Some puppies take to learning and training better than others and some puppies nail some tasks yet are nowhere with others. Some puppies will require some puppy training aids, such as puppy pads, puppy sprays or even the odd puppy treat.

At Pet Hero you’ll find all the products and items you need to make your new puppy’s arrival a joy, for both of you.
