It’s no secret that dogs can get all of the vitamins and minerals they need from high-quality dog food – especially dog food that has been fortified with vitamins and minerals to ensure dogs eat a healthy, balanced diet. However, just like humans, some dogs may have a physical condition or genetic disease that causes a deficiency in certain vitamins or minerals, in which case they may need to be supplemented.

Can dogs have vitamins and minerals?

Dogs should not be given vitamins and minerals that are indicated for humans, which is why veterinarians prescribe dog-appropriate supplements when necessary. If your dog appears poorly or you notice concerning symptoms, take them to the vet for a check-up. If the vet recommends a vitamin and/or mineral supplement, browse Pet Hero’s range of supplements to find the right one for your dog based on your vet’s recommendation.

What vitamin is best for dogs?

Only supplement your dog’s diet with vitamins or minerals as advised by the vet. Some conditions under which your dog may need a supplement include: if your dog has been ill or is recovering from injury and needs a nutrient or calorie boost; if your dog has a proven deficiency in minerals, such as calcium; if your dog has skin allergies; or needs additional support for liver problems, heart health, kidney health, and joint mobility. Ageing dogs also have different vitamin and mineral needs to younger dogs, so supplementing their diet can prove beneficial to older dogs’ wellbeing.
