Recall and Sit Instruction

Decide on your whistle signal, typically three short whistles for recall and one long whistle for sit.

Recall:

  • Attach a training line to his collar.
  • Allow him to wander.
  • Call his name enthusiastically, give your chosen whistle command, and open your arms.
  • Once he reaches you, praise and reward him;
    • when he is reluctant, use the training line to reel him in.
    • When he is consistent in responding well, stop using verbal commands and only use the whistle commands and open arm motion.

Sit:

  • Hold a treat over your dog’s nose and slowly move it over the back of his head. His bottom should go down onto the floor.
  • As he sits, give him the whistle command.
  • Praise and reward him.
  • Repeat, gradually phasing out the treat.
  • When consistent, increase the distance between you and your dog and give the whistle command.
  • Reward him.

Starting instructions

  • Training your dog to react to the whistle is simple: Link the sound with a reward.
  • Condition your dog to the sound of the whistle.
  • Blow and immediately treat.
