Just like our four-legged friends love healthy treats, so too do pet birds have foods that are considered supplementary or treat foods. These are high-value foods for which they will perform tricks and which can be used in positive reinforcement exercises. And just like with our furry friends, our feathered friends should not be fed on treats alone – they need a fresh, varied and balanced diet to stay healthy.

What can birds eat as a snack?

Pet birds love all sorts of bird food as well as fresh fruit and vegetables – adding some variety to their nutrition. They also love treats in the form of seed bells, exotic fruit mixes, nuts and corn (mielies). These treats can be used to encourage them to forage or as a reward for performing tricks and tasks.

And if you don’t have a pet bird, but really want to treat the birds in your garden, a suet ball or slab is the perfect winter treat to give them extra energy and high-density food.

What should you never feed a bird?

There is a long list of human foods that are toxic to pet birds, but the most common include: anything containing chocolate, caffeine, or xylitol. Avocado is a huge no-no. Salt, onions, garlic. Animal fat and oils. Fruit pips or apple seeds. If you have any doubts about which foods your pet bird shouldn’t eat, speak to your vet or do thorough research – it’s better to be safe than sorry.
