It gives bird owners great joy watching our feathered friends eat and enjoy their bird food. Their beaks and claws are the perfect tools for holding fruit, cracking open seeds and nuts, foraging for treats and otherwise engaging with their meals. Birds’ nutrition is the foundation on which their health either thrives or suffers, so make sure you feed your bird a high-quality and high-variety diet to ensure they live a long and happy life.

What should I feed my pet bird?

Since we keep birds in an environment that doesn’t always allow them to practise their natural behaviours – like going out and feeding on a variety of foods – it’s important that we bring that variety to them. Feed them specially formulated bird food that is specific to their species, as well as a variety of fresh fruit and veggies, and a limited amount of nuts and seeds. AVOID toxic foods like avocado, onions and garlic.

What can you feed any bird?

Whether you are feeding wild birds in your garden or your pet cockatiel or budgie, all birds need variety. However, most birds will eat sunflower seeds, suet, nuts, crushed corn, millet and even mealworms. Pet birds love a variety of fruits, but wild birds do too. If you want to attract birds to your garden, place wild bird seed varieties in your bird feeder, but also put out fruits like apple, banana, papaya and berries and see which new feathered friends come along to enjoy your garden buffet.
